The 5th edition of the Cape Town Art Fair (CTAF) took place from February 17 to February 19, 2017, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Managed by Fair Curator Tumelo Mosaka, it was the most applied-for edition in the event's history at the time, featuring over 80 local and international exhibitors.
Today I want to describe my impressions after visiting the Cape Town Art Fair.
Impressions
are very straight from the tin. The city has already hosted the Art Fair 5 times. Initially, the location was not entirely successful, and it was
attended only by local artists and galleries, but in any way it was
interesting.
South Africa is very far from the world, and the
relationship between artists and galleries is a bit snobbish. The art market mainly relies on tourists, but you know- tourists coming
to relax and not to buy artworks. Such an Art Fair is to bring an
unprecedented revival not only in the art life of Cape Town, but also on the
entire African continent. At this year's Fair, as the organizers say, 80 participants attended, including local and foreign
participants: galleries, publishing houses, cultural platforms,
interactive platforms, and that is awesome!
Very fresh
and attractive looked galleries from African countries, Ghana, Uganda
and Ivory Coast. They presented their artists, and I think that for them
it is a great chance to show themselves in Cape Town, because in
addition to all well-known local galleries and galleries from
Johannesburg, there are guests here from England, France, Belgium and
the Netherlands. It is a pity that the organizers in the booklet do not
specify the geography of participants. Honestly, Europeans looked, in my
opinion, not so interesting as participants from African countries.
Good
news for South African art is that it will soon be opened in Cape Town
ZEITZ Museum of Contemporary Art, which is now in a state of
construction.
I still have yet to share an unpleasant
impression, but it came at me today at the festival, and a little bit
earlier, and I'll tell you about it. For several years running, an interesting initiative- First Thursday Open Gallery Night! Great idea, and people were walking from gallery to gallery with pleasure, of course,
drinking a delicious wine! I got information on FB about the exhibition of
well-known South African artist Maria Sinbade and decided to attend it.
It turned out that it was in a new Mo Mo gallery.
The gallery was open in
the building of the Jewel Africa factory, a luxurious space in a good
area and with free parking. All is complete, except one thing- I do not even
know what it's called- except the soul of the gallery.
It was all very
strange -the impression that art is no use to anyone; they invited
artists, opened the doors, and all. Full spiritual emptiness; there are
no labels, descriptions, or people who can explain what was going on-
just thoroughfare. I hope that Mary Sibande will read my words and
in the future will never give her beautiful installations to this gallery, because at the Art Fair it was the same- her installation was placed in a
strange angle, and again there were no signs indicating her
authorship. This is a real shame! Why do they start the gallery if they do not respect art?!

напишу о своем впечатлении после посещения Кейптаун Арт Фейр.
Впечатления очень свеженькие. Уже в 5 раз в городе проводится Арт
Фестиваль. Изначально площадка была не совсем удачной и в нем принимали
участия только местные художники и галереи, но и то было интересно.
Южная Африка находится очень далеко от всего мира и отношения галереий и
художников немного снобистское. Арт ранок в основном полагается на
приезжих туристов, но как известно- туристы едут отдыхать, а не покупать
произведения искусства. По этому проведения подобного Арт Фестивала
должно принести небывалое оживление не только в жизньудожественного
Кейптауна, но и всего африканского континента. В нынешнем фестивале, как
говорят устроители, приняло участие 80 участников, среди которых
местные и иностранные участники, галереи, издательства, интернетные и
культурные платформы платформы и это здорово!
Очень свежо и
привлекающе выглядели галереи из Африканских стран Ганы, Уганды и Берега
Слоновой Кости. Они представляли своих художников и я считаю, что для
них это огромный шанс заявить о себе в Кейптауне, потому что кроме всех
уже давно известных местных галерей и галерей из Йоханесбурга, сюда
приехали гости из Англии, Франции, Бельгии и Нидерландов. Жаль, что
устроители в буклете не указали географию участников. Честно сказать,
они выглядели по моему не столь интересно, как участники из африканских
стран. Приятно сознавать, что вскоре в Кейптауне откроется ZEITZ Музей
Современного Искусства, который находится сейчас в состоянии
строительства.
Я все таки должна еще поделиться и неприятным
впечатлением, но возникло оно у меня не сегодня на фестивале, а чуть
раньше и я расскажу о нем. В Кейптауне уже несколько лет работает
интересная инициатива- Ночное посещение галерей в первый четверг каждого
месяца! Прекрасная идея и люди с огромным удовольствием ходят из
галереи в галерею, конечно же попивая вкуснейшее вино! Вот и я узнав в
ФБ ленте о выставке известной южноафриканской художницы Марии Синбаде,
решила непременно посетить ее. Оказалось, что ее представляет новая
галерея под названием МО МО. Галерею открыли в здании Ювелирной Фабрики,
помещение роскошное в хорошем районе и с свободным паркингом. Все в
полном комплекте, кроме- даже не знаю как это назвать- кроме души самой
галереи. Очень странно это все- создалось впечатление, что искусство
здесь никому не нужно, пригласили художников, открыли двери и все.
Полная душевная пустота, нет ни одной таблички с описанием работ и
названием- просто проходной двор. Я надеюсь, что может быть Мария
Синдбаде прочтет мои слова и больше никогда не даст свои работы этой
галерее, потому как и на Фестивале ее инсталяцию запихали в странный угол
и опять же не было таблички с указанием ее авторства. Позор!Зачем открывать галерею не имея уважения к искусству?!
