Babulnath Temple, Mumbai, India

Babulnath Temple of Shiva Linga and Idols was consecrated in the 12th century by the then Hindu Raja Bhimdev. Since that time, the temple was destroyed and lost its form. The idols of the temple were re-discovered in the period 1700 to 1780.
The first 5 original idols were found. These were the figures of Shiva, Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman and Parvati. Of these, the first four are in the temple. The fifth figure Pravati was submerged in the sea as it has been broken, it was dug in the 18th century.
The new church was built in 1780.
The temple was built on land owned by the Parsi community. There were five burials of Parsi. The Parsi communities were very opposed to the construction of the temple. This resistance continued until the end of 1800 and was resolved only in a court in favour of the church.
The construction of the temple Babulnath have been patronized by Hindu merchants, and most importantly the Gujarati community. A larger church was built in 1890 by contributions from the Gujarati traders and Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad of Baroda. The existing structure of the temple dates back to 1890, the height of the temple was significant, in its construction in 1890, but in 1960 a lightning strike damaged the spire, which significantly reduced the height of the temple. Until the 1980s Babulnath Temple was one of the highest in Mumbai.
