Queen Victoria Market is a landmark in Melbourne, takes about seven hectares (17 acres) and is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere. The market is essential to the culture and heritage of Melbourne and was included in the register of attractions of the Victorian era. The market is named after Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Empire, from 1837 to 1901.
Queen Victoria Market is the only survivor on the market since the 19th century in the central business district of Melbourne. Earlier in Melbourne was once three major markets, but two of them, the eastern market and western market were closed in the 1960s. The Market is also part of an important collection of preserved Victorian markets, which includes internal market Prahran and South Melbourne.
Since its opening in 1878, Queen Victoria Market had a varied history. Initially there was a cemetery, then the livestock market and the wholesale market for fruit and vegetables.
