Bartolomeu Diaz, portueges explorer and navigator. SA History.

The first European who enter South Africa was Bartolomeu Diaz and it happened in 1488.

Bartolomeo Diaz (1450-1500) was a scientist, he studied mathematics and astrology at the University of Lisbon. After graduation, he worked as a manager of the royal warehouses of the Port of Lisbon.

In 1481, he took part as captain of one of the ships on the expedition of Diogo de Azanbuzh, which was sent to Ghana for the construction of the fort of Elmen. At that time, Portugal occupied the leading position in the discovery of new lands and in search of a sea route to India.

The main in Portuges discoverer of that time was Diogo Cao and he managed to reach the coast of Angola. After his death, Bartolomeo Diaz was appointed his successor.
A squadron of three ships, Diaz, left the River Tagus at Lisbon in August 1487. The name of the flagship did not survive, but we know that the pilot of Diaz was Pero de Alenquer. The second caravel was San Pantaleo, she was commanded by João Infante and ruled by Alvaro Martins. Diogo Dias, Bartolomeu's brother, commanded the ship's store, square-rigger.

They carried six African hostages with them. They were to be landed in various places on the coast so that they could talk about the greatness of the Portuguese and explain to local leaders that the Portuguese king wished to establish friendly relations and establish contact with the

To replenish the reserves before the flight outside the Congo, the squadron stopped at San Jorge de Mina, the Portuguese fortress on the Gold Coast. They came to the barren Namibian coast in December and in Angola they added supplies and supplies to the store and left him at anchor with a crew of nine. After Cape Cross they sailed alongside the coast. It is assumed that they reached the Golfo da Conseicao (Walvis Bay)

December 8, where they probably anchored. Sailing south along the coast of Namakvaland, they passed through the Gulf of St. Thomas (Spencer Bay) and Angra-das Voltas (Luderitz). Continuing their journey along the inhospitable coast, they sailed to Golfo de Santo Estevan (Elizabeth Bay). On January 6, Diaz pointed to a series of mountains of Serra dos Reis (northern Kedarberg). In addition, traditionally, they encounter unfavorable winds. For several days they were at sea during a storm and as they could not approach the shore, they involuntarily bypassed the Cape of Good Hope at the end of January 1488.

While they were walking along the southern shores, they approached the mouth of the Guriths, where they saw how the Hoi Khois cared for their horned cattle. They called this river Rio-Vauceyros (river Pastukhov).

Much suffering from wind and weather, in early February 1488, they rushed east along the coast and realizing that they must have bypassed the African continent, they anchored in a wide bay to replenish their water barrels. They called this gulf Golfo de São Bras (Gulf of Mossel). Here the locals offered to exchange their trinkets and sailors could buy barter cattle and sheep. But later the koykhois became distrustful of the sailors and attacked them. Escaping from the attack, Diaz shot one of them, forcing the others to run away in horror. The sailors immediately left for their ships and the expedition sailed east to Bahia da Roca (Algoa Bay), where they anchored at the foot of the largest of the three rocky islets, overflowing with sea birds and sea.
Nine years had to pass before the next Portuguese fleet under the command of Vasco da Gama went to Africa in search of India. During this time, Joao II died (1495), and was succeeded by his cousin and son-in-law Manuel, who showed great interest in exploration. Diaz accompanied the Da Gama fleet to the Cape Verde Islands, where he remained commanding the fort from Mina. Diaz acquired the experience of trading in Mina and brought with him a load of gold and slaves that were sold to provide finance for further expeditions.

His discovery in 1488 of the Cape of Good Hope showed that in Europe there is a possible route to India around the southern tip of Africa. He also discovered for Europe, the southeast trade winds and the western winds in the west and south of South Africa, thereby creating a system of winds for those who sailed after him. Diaz was, in fact, the first sailor, who rounded the cape.

Nevertheless, Diaz's voyage was fraught with consequences, since at that time the search for a transition to India was a step in the great struggle between the Muslim world and the Christian world. The epic journey of Diaz not only opened the sea route to India; He paved the way for contact between Europe, Africa and the East, greatly expanding the Portuguese sphere of influence. Early information on Diaz's journey is limited, because all the actual records of his journey were lost when the San Jorge castle in which they were located burned down after the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755.

John, the legendary Christian king of Ethiopia. The Portuguese king wanted them to know that they were looking for a way to India to develop trade.

South African History.

I decided to share with you, my dear friends, the history of the establishment of the Republic of South Africa. South Africa is the first country that is recognized by Europeans on the African continent. Despite the fact that the Portuguese navigators, in search of a sea route to India, often visited these places, they did not dare to conquer. The apparent reason was the local tribes Khoi-khoi and san, who, despite their low growth and imperfect weapons, represented a clear threat to strangers.

Some information about the true masters of the southern part of the African continent.

                                            Tribes of khoi-khoi and san.

It is believed that the settling of tribes of hunter-gatherers took place about 2300 years ago (and up to the present time) in the territory of modern Botswana. Their population grew and spread throughout the western part of South Africa. They were the first cattlemen in southern Africa and called themselves Khoikhoi (or Khoe), which means "men" or "real people". This name was chosen to show pride in their past and culture. The koykhois brought a new way of life to South Africa and to the San tribes who were hunter-gatherers. Later this led to misunderstandings and a subsequent conflict between the two groups. The Khoykhoys were the first indigenous people who came into contact with Dutch settlers in the middle of the 17th century. European settlers called them "Hottentots", because the sound of their language was so different from any European language that they could not pronounce many words and sounds.
Settlers used the term "Bushmen" for San people, a term that today is considered humiliating.

To the "Bushmen" are also the Sa, Sonquva, Masarva, Basarva tribes and they use  Khosaic languages for which the cliques and the tszoki are characteristic and they refer to the Kapoid race. The total number now is 100 thousand people.

There is a very interesting fact about the fact that they are carriers of the genetic haplogroup A-which belonged to Adam-the first man who lived on earth 75 thousand years ago.
