 Wadiyar Dynasty dates back to Yadav (ancient Indian people who considered themselves descendants of Yadu, the mythical king). They came in Karnataka and seeing the beauty decided to stay here and built Mysore. Yadava ruled the area for 600 years. The dynasty was founded in 1399 Yaduraya Wodeyar. They ruled Mysore in times of Vijayanagara Empire until 1423. After Yaduraya Wodeyar in Mysore became a Wadiyar. Kingdom was not so big in this early period and was part of the Vijayanagara Empire. After the fall of Vijayanagara Empire in 1565, the Mysore kingdom became independent and remained so until 1799.

During the reign of Krishnaraja Wadiyar III (1799-1868), the region came under the control of the British Empire. His successors changed the English spelling of its name and the royal Wadiyar Bahadur and took the title. The last two monarchs of the dynasty, Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the British also took the title of Commander of the Grand Order of the British Empire.
